How to use the LED Viewing Distance Calculator

  1. Enter your screen’s pixel pitch in millimeters, or tap a preset (P1.9, P2.5, P2.6, P3.9).
  2. Read the minimum, optimal and retina distances in meters and feet.
  3. Compare against how close your audience will actually stand.
  4. Use the reference table to pick a pitch that stays crisp at that distance.

The LED viewing distance calculator answers the most important question when picking a screen: how close can people stand before they see individual pixels? It takes a single input — the pixel pitch in millimeters — and returns the minimum, optimal and retina viewing distances in meters and feet.

The formulas

Three simple rules of thumb tie pixel pitch to distance:

  • Minimum distance (m) ≈ pixel pitch (mm). This is the well-known "1 mm of pitch ≈ 1 m" rule — below this distance the pixel grid becomes visible. A P2.6 screen resolves cleanly from about 2.6 m.
  • Optimal distance (m) ≈ pixel pitch (mm) × 2.5. The most comfortable distance for the average viewer, where the image is sharp but the screen still fills the field of view. Rental and AV practice uses a 2.5–3× factor.
  • Retina distance (m) ≈ pixel pitch (mm) × 3.438. Derived from human visual acuity: a 20/20 eye resolves about one arc-minute, and 1 ÷ tan(1 arc-min) ≈ 3438, so pixels become completely invisible at pitch × 3.438 m.

Why it matters for photo walls and events

For a photo wall people stand close — often 1–3 m — so a tight pitch like P2.6 keeps faces and text crisp in photos and on camera. For a large stage backdrop the audience is far away, so a coarser (cheaper) pitch is perfectly fine. Matching pitch to distance is the single biggest lever on both image quality and cost.

Reading the table

The reference table lists common pitches from P1.5 to P10 with their minimum and optimal distances. Find the closest distance your audience will stand and read across to the pitch that keeps the image clean.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate LED viewing distance from pixel pitch?

The quick rule is that the minimum comfortable distance in meters roughly equals the pixel pitch in millimeters. A P2.6 screen looks clean from about 2.6 m, and its optimal distance is around 6.5 m (pitch × 2.5).

What is the optimal viewing distance for a P2.6 LED wall?

About 6.5 m for the average viewer (2.6 × 2.5). Pixels first stop being visible at roughly 2.6 m, and they are fully invisible to 20/20 vision by about 8.9 m.

What pixel pitch is best for a photo wall?

Because guests stand within a few meters of a photo wall and it is photographed close up, a fine pitch such as P2.6 (or finer) is ideal — it keeps faces and text sharp both to the eye and on camera.

Is a smaller pixel pitch always better?

Only if people stand close. A finer pitch costs more per square meter, so for a far-away stage backdrop a coarser pitch gives the same perceived quality for less money. Match the pitch to the viewing distance.
